Not quite the million dollar question but wouldn’t it help knowing that if you spent a little bit of money on your car before you sell it, you would get more for it?
By the same token wouldn’t it be useful knowing whether or not it would be a waste of money spending your hard earned cash on your car in the vain hope of getting a higher selling price?
Should I get the body work fixed before I sell my car?
The straight forward answer is a big resounding YES a car is always worth more if it doesn’t need any work doing to it and if it looks in good condition a buyer will more often and not think the car has been well looked after and be inclined to make you a better offer.
If you are selling your car privately then you should consider fixing the small dents, scuffs & scratches. A smart repair specialist can do these for less than you may think. What you have got to think about is will I get that money back, when I sell my car? Will any buyer still try and knock me down on price?
The chances are they will, but perhaps by less than what they would have done had you not tidied the car up. Before you try to sell your car you should ask yourself whether or not you asking a realistic price for your car or are you asking for a price you have seen a dealer selling them for (a common mistake).
If you have decided to part exchange your car or sell it online to a cash for car company than it probably isn’t worth paying to get small bumps, scratches and dents done. Find out what you could get for your car as it is, be honest and let the buyer know if there are some small car park/trolley dents, a couple of small bumper scuffs etc… This type of minor damage does not affect the value of your car by as much as you may think it would. Dealers and buyers often have smart repair companies who they use regularly and can get these repairs done much cheaper than you could have them done yourself.
If you are honest in how you describe your car when you are selling it then you will know the price offered is a genuine offer and one that can be compared like for like with other similar companies.
If you are thinking I want to sell my car, here at Car Arena we make you a genuine offer to buy your car, based on your description and our discussions. The offer you receive will be paid to you in full when we come to you to collect your car. We use independent collection companies who are merely there to give the car a brief look over and check the paper work. They are not there to start renegotiating the deal we have already agreed on, they don’t even know how much we have paid for the car. The money is in your bank account before we leave with your car.
We do have our own smart repair business, so as long as you tell us about any scuffs, or dents then we are certain we can get these repaired professionally much cheaper than you could yourself. Saving you time, money and hassle.

Something we would all like to know…how can I get more money when I sell my car?
Should you do those niggling little jobs, should you get the service done that is due?
The obvious answer would be yes, but this may not necessarily be true in some circumstances.
Should I get my car serviced before I sell it?
Cars will always sell for a higher price if the service history is complete, if you have full main dealer service history than your car should be worth a little but more than a car with independent service history. This is especially true if you own one of the more prestige brands such as Audi, BMW & Mercedes and a given if you are fortunate enough to own a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari or one other the true luxury car Marques.
A car without any service history or very little history is worth substantially less than a car with full service history.
But the question was, should I get my car serviced before I sell it? It truly depends on who you are selling it to. If you are trying to sell your car privately then it is probably worth the additional expense if it means you can advertise your car for sale with full service history. But when you consider a service can cost anywhere between £50 and £250 plus, depending on the make, model, type of service and whether or not you are using a main dealer to service the car. You will need to consider whether or not this means you can ask £200 more for the car or will it save you from reducing the offer by that amount when the seller sees a service is due.
If truth be told, it will probably mean you will get nearer to your asking price than you would if the service was overdue. It will also help make achieving a sale easier, making your car more desirable than others with less service history, considering everything it is money worth spending to help you get the maximum price for your car when selling privately.
Where I would argue it may not be a good investment is if you are selling to a dealer or a cash for car company. If your car has full service history and is due one before you sell it or within a couple of weeks of the sale and you are selling to a dealer then you should use this as a negotiating tool, i.e. you will service the car if they agree to increase their offer. In many instance these companies have their own service departments and a service will cost them much less then it would cost you. They may turn to you and say they can offer you £50 or £100 less for your car as it is due a service, it makes sense to accept this reduced offer if it is going to cost you £150 to service your car.

With another year of doom & gloom forecast for 2012, what have the car manufactures got up their sleeves to attract new car buyers (a declining breed), into their showrooms?
Will we see a year of mediocre cars, limited editions and desperate discounting to encourage as many potential buyers as possible into the showrooms.
The used car market is suffering from reduced supply of nearly new cars. With most people holding onto their cars for longer, the usual supply of two and three year old cars has almost dried up. Fleet sales are doing their best to keep car sales moving forward but until the public have the confidence or the desire to go out and start buying new cars again then we could be in the doldrums for longer than just another year.
Many used car dealers have moved into what they call “price range cars” older cars, perhaps with higher mileage that they can sell for£2,000 – £5,000, keeping their businesses afloat until the market turns. High quality cars in this category are difficult to buy, they have to be certain that the car has been well maintained and serviced regularly. There lies another issue, because money is tight for many people car maintenance and servicing is one area where people are desperately cutting back, sometimes at the expense of safety. This must also be a false economy. Not looking after your car correctly will dramatically shorten it’s life and most definitely reduce it’s value. Meaning you will have to change it sooner than you had planned and you will receive less for it than you would do had it been serviced correctly.
Getting distracted there, but perhaps that gives you a little bit of insight into how lack of brand new car buyers has a knock on effect on the used car markets, so we hope new car launches planned for 2012 really do whet the appetitie of potential purhcasers and help get this economy moving…even if it is just alittle help in the right direction.
Whilst the above list is not exhaustive it does give a clear indication that some major manufacturers are taking the 2012 challenge seriously, investing heavily in new models, not just minor face lifts to try and kick start the ailing industry.
All we can do is sit tight, keep costs down and make the most of any opportunities that may come our way.
Good luck!

When you sell your car to Car Arena you don’t have to wait four days for your money, you don’t even have to wait 24 hours.
When we come to collect your car, you are paid in full by secure bank transfer. This normally takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Our collection drivers wait with you until you are able to confirm that the cleared funds are in your bank account. There’s no additional charge for this, it’s your money and we believe you should have it before you release the car to us.
If finance is outstanding, we clear this in full, sending the receipt and any the balance to you before you release the car.
If there is a shortfall between what you are selling your car for and how much is owed on the finance, we take the shortfall by credit or debit card and then clear your finance in full. Again we send you proof that the payment has been made to your finance company.
There’s absolutely no risk when selling your car to Car Arena.
